First Post

I figured I would start a blog about my journey with living with IBS.  I figure with my first post, I should start with how my doctor came to his diagnosis.

As long as I can remember something just hasn't been right with my innards (I really hate the term bowels).  I would get inexplicably bloated for no reason, not poop for days at a time,  have food sensitivities one day, but not the next. I would lose bloat and go down almost a shirt size randomly, then within a day or two "gain" it back but not see it on the scale.  It was frustrating, but I figured it was the good old American diet and being obese that was causing my problems.

Late last month I went to the ER with chest pain.  They told me to take Ibuprofen and go home.  The pain progressed to where my gallbladder is located and my doctor and I decided to make sure I was fine in that aspect.  My tests came back fine and when I was following a diet similar, but stricter, to FODMAPS for my gallbladder (No meat, no dairy, no wheat, no legumes, no high sugar or salt, only certain fruits in vegetables) I felt better.  I was still in chronic pain and constipated CONSTANTLY, but it was better than I was feeling.  He said after I described my symptoms, and my struggles with GERD, that he thinks I have fatty liver which caused the chest pain, and IBS which caused my other symptoms.

My doctor prescribed trying the FODMAPs diet with a focus on lower fat and calorie count.  He also prescribed Nortriptyline to go with my diet as it should help with my current pain and it helps things "go smoother down below," if you catch my drift. I am obese (current BMI is 42.7) but after following my previous diet I thought would help my gallbladder I lost 11 lbs in less than a month.

My goals with starting this blog is to try:

  • To cut caffeine completely out.
  • To lose weight healthily.
  • To be come more active.
  • To not eat out as much.
  • To have a log to see what is working to make my health better.
What I plan to do with this blog:

  • Any tips I learn along this journey.
  • New recipes I try, that don't trigger symptoms.
  • Weekly updates with how I am doing.
  • Reviews for food products designed for IBS.
Thank you for reading,

Lori
